The Norristown Area NAACP unveils the first phase of their reading project READ-IT ~ Everybody's doing It! on December 22, 2010 with a billboard near DeKalb Street Bridge in Norristown, that can be viewed by northbound motorists. The Education Committee of NAACP cannot think of a better gift to give our children than the gift of reading. This billboard is Lamar Advertising's gift as their commitment to support our students and community members to become avid readers. The display shows a group of pre-school students with sparks in their eyes as they enjoy their books; and a father who shares a book with his three daughters. Reading is an essential skill to success in life, and the NAACP is proud to collaborate with the Norristown Area School District to strongly recommend our families and other community members to set aside time daily to read, so it becomes part of their everyday activities. The NASD students in kindergarten through eighth grade are participating in a twenty-five book challenge and the NAACP encourages parents, guardians, friends and community members to support this challenge by encouraging children to participate.
The second phase of the NAACP reading program is a poster campaign of over fifty (50) faces of community leaders, children and everyday folks who volunteered to pick up a book and READ-IT. Most importantly, the message of the photo collages show that whatever career path you follow, reading is going to be a very valuable and necessary tool. These posters will be displayed in the district schools and various venues throughout the Municipality of Norristown, and East and West Norriton. These important community figures may inspire a child to pick up a book and read. This project reflects the Norristown NAACP's pledge to continue to support the children of the district to become interested learners, by encouraging everyone (all ages) to pick up a book and read.
As we approach this season of caring, sharing and giving, the NAACP wants to extend a heartfelt Thank You, to the many community members and businesses that joined this campaign to promote reading. In addition to our spectacular READ-IT billboard, local residents will also see our colorful READ-IT banners which soon will be displayed above street level on various Norristown thoroughfares! Have a Happy Holiday Season and make your New Year's resolution be… 'Take more time to read in 2011!'
