Special Education Services
The Norristown Area School District is committed to helping your child achieve his/her educational potential. Each school screens students in grades K-12 who are having difficulty learning and who may be eligible for special education. Multidisciplinary Evaluations (MDE’s), designed to assess the learning needs of individual students, may be conducted at any time during the school year. MDE’s may be initiated by the school staff or at the request of a parent. The purpose of educational screening and MDE’s is to identify students who may need special support to succeed in regular education and/or who may be eligible for special education. Special education services are available for children with the following disabilities: autism, pervasive development disorder (PDD), blindness or visual impairment, deafness or hearing impairment, mental retardation, multi-handicap, neurological impairment (brain damage), physical disability, serious emotional disturbance, specific learning disability, speech and language impairment and other impairments. To request a multidisciplinary evaluation for a school-aged child, contact your child’s teacher, guidance counselor, or school principal. All information collected for individual children during the MDE process is protected in accordance with state and federal law and by the school district’s policy on confidentiality of students’ records.
