Lannutti, Winder Are Recipients of Inaugural Alumni Scholarships

Two new NAHS alumni will continue their education this fall with financial assistance from the Alumni Association.

Kelly Lannutti and Randy Winder were the first recipients of the Alumni Scholar-ship, as announced at Commencement Exercises on June 11

Kelly, a National Merit Scholar who will be attending Franklin and Marshall College in the fall, has represented NAHS worldwide.  In her junior year she participated in the first International Youth Leadership Conference in Sidney, Australia.  As a senior she won DECA district and state competitions, thereby earning a trip to the national competition in Salt Lake City, Utah.

As a member of the Student Council cabinet, Kelly chaired many events.  The one of which she is most proud is the “Mr. Norristown Pageant” which she started to benefit the “Make a Wish Foundation.”

Randy, an honor roll student, is majoring in journalism at Penn State University.  He started his college career this summer, attending the summer session at PSU.  Randy served as an editor of the NAHS newspaper, The Wingspan.  Randy was also a member of DECA, and reached state competition twice.  Additionally, he served as a Student Council homeroom representative, and a Peer Mediator.  Randy received the Donald Shaffer Writing Award at the Senior Awards Ceremony on May 29th.

Both students participated in the Sister City Exchange program with Montella, Italy.  This past spring they traveled to Montella and lived with a host family for two weeks.

A Return of “An Afternoon of Nostalgia" Set for April 28

Dedication of the Memory Garden will precede the activities.

Based on the tremendous response of the first “Afternoon of Nostalgia” held last April, the Alumni Association is planning an encore event on Sunday, April 28 in the high school cafeteria.  The display of memorabilia will be preceded by the dedication of the newly- planted Memory Garden.  The Garden is dedicated to the memory of Norristown High School staff and will contain plaques in the memory of Paul Rehrig (counselor and psychology teacher), Paul Rohrback (science teacher), Coach Chiccino (softball coach), and Dorotha Roth (chemistry teacher).  The area was originally dedicated to DECA President Mark Signore who died while still in high school.

The dedication is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Garden, which is at the base of the flagpole.

The dedication will include  songs performed by some teachers and English teacher John Doyle, Class of ’81, will read a poem.

Following the dedication, a reception will follow in the high school cafeteria, along with displays of memorabilia that has been dedicated to the Alumni Association.

Of special interest will be materials from the Rittenhouse School that have been donated in the past year.

Donations of memorabilia to the Alumni Association may be made by contacting Cheryl (Larkins) Brumbaugh, Class of ’73 or Maggie Hall.

In Memory of ...

· Coach Chiccino, softball coach

· Paul Rehrig, World Cultures, Psychology teacher, Counselor

· Paul Rohrback, Science teacher

· Dorotha Roth, Chemistry teacher
