Alumni Association Changes Focus, Meetings Dear Alumni: Many of you received a survey in the spring asking for your thoughts with regard to the meeting structure and events held by the NAHS Alumni Association. We were very pleased with the response to this survey as it has helped us determine what you, as members, are interested in getting out of the organization. As a result we have decided to focus on quality, not quantity. In the coming year, we will be cutting back the number of events sponsored in an effort to focus on what you enjoy the most and therefore increase participation. Furthermore, beginning in the fall, meetings will be held bi-monthly on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 pm in the High School as follows: September 11 and November 13, 2007, January 8, March 11, and May 13, 2008. We hope that this new meeting structure will allow more people to dedicate an hour of their time every 60 days support the NAHS community. Our first meeting will primarily focus on the number and type of events that we will hold during the 2007-2008 school year. If you feel strongly about any events or programs that we currently offer, or have ideas for new ones, we ask you to join us in September. I look forward to meeting lots of new faces over the coming year. Sincerely, Jennifer (Clemente) Ackerman, ‘98 President |

Celebrating 50 Years Cole Manor is Golden It was a beautiful day on November 15, 2006 as Cole Manor Elementary School celebrated its 50th birthday on the 50th day of school. The staff and student body gathered outside as former teacher, Lynda Bair, emcee for the event, recalled mo-ments from Cole Manor’s history. State Senator Connie Williams presented a con-gratulatory proclamation to one of the youngest students. The proclamation, from the Pennsylvania Senate, recog-nized Cole Manor’s history. Mrs. Beth Pearson Bauer, former Cole Manor prince-pal, currently a principal in the Wissahickon School District, attended the cere-mony, as did former Cole Manor counselor Norma Zarfoss and retired teachers Mary Meyer and Jean Branco. Special guests included Bill Kohler, retired supervi-sor of elementary curricu-lum, and Bob Kratz, retired Times Herald photographer, who had taken pictures of Cole Manor during its construction. History of Cole Manor Cole Manor School was the second elementary school built by the East Norriton School District, the first being Penn Square School. With enrollment at Penn Square increasing, the School Board decided another school was needed to relieve overcrowding. Twelve acres of land were purchased in January 1955 from Dr. and Mrs. Russell B. Hunsberger for construc-tion of the school. The name of the school was taken from the commun-ities where the building is located, Coleston and DeKalb Manor. The original building had 12 elementary classrooms designed to hold 360 students. Originally, there were only three wings of the school, with heating and sewage for a fourth wing put in place during the initial construction. Total cost of the construction was $532,092. Cole Manor opened for classes in 1957 with Kindergarten and Grades 1, 2, and 3. Supervising Principal was Marlin Brandt. The dedication was held on November 10 of that year. In 1967, a six-room addition to the school was completed. It included a music room, an enlargement of the multipurpose room, and the addition of a stage. Additional renovations occurred in 1980. Memories of Cole Manor Alumni are invited to celebrate Cole Manor’s 50th anniversary by sending your memories and stories of the school. Include your name, phone number or e-mail address in case any clarification is needed. E-mail them to alumni@nasd.k12.pa.us (put “Cole Manor Memories” in the subject line) or mail them to: Cole Manor Memories NAHS Alumni Association 1900 Eagle Drive Norristown, PA, 19403 They will be posted on the Alumni Association’s web site and will be presented to the Cole Manor staff and students. |
