| The Winfield Scott Hancock Elementary School was constructed in 1962. The school is located in the borough of Norristown, and educates approximately 380 students in kindergarten through grade 4. The school is a neighborhood school with 75 percent of the children within walking distance. The school’s Reading program is the district’s balanced literacy curriculum which includes reading, writing, and speaking skills at all levels. Children are taught basic skills through reasoning, deducting and analyzing. The Mathematics program is Everyday Math which includes direct instruction, centers work and work with manipulatives. Winfield Scott Hancock Elementary’s PSSA scores for the 2006-2007 showed a Reading proficiency of 75.3%, and a Mathematics proficiency score of 80.9% among the third and fourth graders. AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress), as determined by State goals, was achieved. State Standards were the focus of instruction. Parents are invited to participate in volunteer opportunities with the Parent-Faculty Association. Special parent nights include Parent Orientation, PSSA Nights, Read Across America, Math Night, Family Fun Nights and Burger King Nights. Conferences are held to involve parents in their child’s education. The staff is proud of the children and work tirelessly for their success. |
