Marshall Street Elementary School was built in 1957 as 1 of 2 elementary schools in the West Norriton Township System. Shortly after that, the school was incorporated into the Norristown Area School District. It now houses a student population of over 500 students in grades K-4.
Marshall Street has met the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets for four consecutive years. To help our students be academically successful, we implement various programs to increase the quantity and quality of learning. Our school is a Reading First school, which mandates a comprehensive literacy program based on scientific reading instruction. Our math curriculum is Everyday Math, which provides our students with a spiral approach to mathematical learning. We offer an extended-day program in both reading and math to provide intensive support for our at-risk students.
During the school year, community and parent volunteers assist students and teachers at Marshall Street. Their purpose is to aid in the overall development of the child in conjunction with the classroom teacher. Our school works in conjunction with Family Services of Montgomery County to offer a family strengthening program. FAST (Family and Schools Together) is a community outreach program that provides services to families that aim to build self-esteem and improve school performance. We also work with Family Services to provide a number of classrooms with Foster Grandparents allowing our students to get one to one attention from a very caring “grandma” or “grandpa”. This program has proven to be a ray of sunlight in the lives of children as well as our grandparents.
We strive to celebrate each individual child while helping him or her to become a proud member of the Marshall Street family. Many of our school activities throughout the year will focus on promoting good citizenship in the school and community through the Six Pillars of Character education: Caring, Respect, Fairness, Courage, Citizenship, Responsibility and Trustworthiness. Students at the school are rewarded for their pro-social behavior. They earn BUGS (Being Unbelievably Good Students) to foster good behavior. Students who consistently exemplify good character are honored at the one of the three Above & Beyond assemblies. They are recognized for always “doing the right thing”. We are a designated No Place for Hate School and are very proud to say that we continue to strive and provide a model for combating intolerance, bulling, and hatred.
The community is invited several times during the year to participate in Open House, Reading and Math Nights, Bingo Night, Cinco de Mayo celebration, PSSA Informational Night, Winter and Spring Concerts, Student Conferences, and Dr. Seuss Night. Marshall Street Elementary School is very proud of our well-rounded students.
