RSVP of Montgomery County Recognizes Local Student’s Achievement in Algebra
    RSVP Student
Norristown Area H.S. Assistant Principal Chuck Brenner, presents 9th grade student Oscar Garcia with a new Kindle and a certificate of achievement in Algebra awarded for his participation in RSVP’s My Free Tutor program.

For Immediate Release: DateMarch 26, 2014 Blue Bell, Pa. Local 9th grade Norristown High School student, Oscar Garcia, was presented with a certificate of achievement and a new Kindle from RSVP of Montgomery County.

In October 2013, RSVP launched a pilot virtual tutoring program, My FreeTutor, targeting struggling students in Algebra 1.  Volunteers meet weekly via secure online sessions with their assigned student to go over algebra concepts the student may not be fully grasping. These collaborative sessions provide the student with the one-on-one time they need to move forward in class and also help prepare them to take the Keystone Exams, required for graduation.

Volunteer tutors are guided by an online version of the student’s current textbook and inform the teacher of progress made, ensuring a more collaborative effort on the student’s behalf.

The pilot program was extended in Norristown for an additional semester due to its success.  Beginning in April, RSVP will expand the program to include students at Kensington Health Sciences Academy, a public Philadelphia high school.

Volunteers are able to log in to any computer at any location making this a perfect opportunity for corporate employees. Volunteers are always needed in the program. Corporations should note that the My Free Tutor program is a certified Educational Improvement Organization. Corporations may qualify for an Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC), providing up to a 90% taxcredit, by partnering with RSVP.

RSVP’s varied programs allow volunteers to check in by phone with a homebound senior or utilize their managerial skills to help a struggling nonprofit with capacity building.  Several literacy programs assist youth in classrooms by improving their reading and comprehension skills,or an adult literacy program helps foreign-born citizens to become literate in English. A mentoring program enables volunteers to have a profound impact on the life of an at-risk youth and a Medicare counseling program helps to inform and advise seniors on their best health coverage choices.   Now offering virtual volunteering opportunities for corporate employees.
