• Successful Norristown Area School District alumnus reflects on the quality of learning in the Norristown Area High School.
    Brian Gresko

Brian Gresko, Norristown Area High School Class of 1995, is the editor of the anthology When I First Held You, featuring 22 critically acclaimed authors on fatherhood, forthcoming from Berkley books/Penguin this month. He had this to say about his education in the Norristown Area High School:

"I've always been an avid reader, but never really liked English class, which was so dull – all the grammar lessons and comprehension questions. My classes at Norristown Area High School changed my relationship to books. Acting out short stories in Ms. Davis's class, writing analytic essays with Mr. Nelson, leading a discussion about the work of Charles Dickens in Ms. Silverman's class, to give just a few memorable examples, lit a fire in me for not just reading books, but speaking and writing about them too. These teachers showed me how to express myself with words, but more importantly they encouraged me, insisting that I had interesting things to say. They inspired me to eventually teach English myself, which led me to commit myself fully to writing and literature. Now I pen essays and reviews, and host a reading series featuring writers who are also parents, and I've collected and edited a book of essays, When I First Held You. NAHS set the bedrock of skills, confidence, and passion required to be successful at these endeavors, for which I'm grateful,” Brian said.

On the second Tuesday of most months, Brian can be found at the Pen Parentis Literary Salon, which he curates and hosts. He writes regularly for Babble about parenting and gender roles.

His essays, criticism, and journalism have appeared on the Huffington Post, Salon, the Atlantic.com, The Daily Beast, the Paris Review Daily, the Rumpus and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among numerous others.

Brian has interviewed such acclaimed authors as David Gates, Ann Hood, Owen King, Jonathan Lethem, Karen Russell, Matthew Specktor, and Lynne Tillman.  In print, he has contributed to Glimmer Train Stories and Slice Literary Magazine, and his interview with best-selling novelist Helen Schulman appeared in the paperback edition of her novel, This Beautiful Life.

The Norristown Area School District staff anxiously awaits the release of your book, When I First Held You! Congratulation on your success!
