NASD HEALTH COUNCIL (WELLNESS COMMITTEE)  IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND HOW TO PARTICIPATE!

The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 required each school district participating in the National School Lunch Program to implement a Local Wellness Policy by July 1, 2006. To accomplish this task, the Norristown Area School Health Council was formed during the 2005-06 school year.

The Norristown Area School Health Council (Wellness Committee) continues to work collaboratively to update the Student Wellness policy as we receive direction from the Federal and State Government. Members of The Norristown Area School Health Council currently include a School Board member, district administrators, food service representatives, students, parents, school health professionals, teachers, members of the public, and community partners .

The Norristown Area School Health Council worked diligently during the 2016-2017 to update the policy once again.  The newest policy was adopted by the School Board on May 22, 2017. The policy includes guidelines for the Wellness Committee, Nutrition Education, Nutrition Promotion, Physical Activity, Physical Education, Other School Based Activities, Nutrition Guidelines for All Foods and Beverages at School, Management of Food Allergies in the District, and Safe Routes to School.

A copy of the policy can be found on the District website under Food Service Department, Board Approved Wellness Policy.

We invite you to join the Norristown Area School Health Council so that you too may participate in the development, implementation and periodic review, and update of the School Wellness Policy.  We encourage you to help our school community to continue on the path of health and wellness! You may contact the Food Service Director, Deborah Martin at 610-630-5023.  We look forward to seeing you!

The most recent triennial assessment of the School Wellness Policy was done in the Spring of 2017.

Each school principal was asked to complete the criteria, reviewing their school using the dimensions of unsatisfactory, basic, proficient, and distinguished.  All school results were compiled by the Director of Food Services and provided to the Norristown Area School Health Council and the Board of Directors of the Norristown Area School District.

We invite you to review the assessment of our Local Wellness Policy.  This assessment can be found on the District website under Food Service Department, Local Wellness Policy Assessment.
