Students were introduced to a Mexican folk artist named, Pedro Linares. He was well known for his creations of paper maché figurines named alebrijes. We studied how he combined characteristics of multiple animals to create each figure. The students then created a drawing of at least three animals, then combined to create their unique creature. We then studied how Linares used bright colors and interesting patterns and emulated his style using oil pastels. A couple students that finished early created the patterned designs for the back of the pillows. Then the Fresh Artists organization scanned their images and printed them on fabric. With the help of Ms. Sene, the fabric was trimmed and sewed with only a small whole open. The students each stuffed their pillows and then learned how to sew the opening closed.
