NAHS alumna Lieutenant Junior Grade Amanda Assenmacher (‘12), a Navy Surface Warfare Officer, recently Graduated with Distinction from the US Navy’s Officer Nuclear Power School (NPS), a 6-month academic program designed to prepare sailors to operate and maintain the Navy’s nuclear reactors aboard aircraft carriers and submarines. NPS is widely considered to be the most demanding academic program in the U.S. military, covering subjects such as nuclear and health physics, electrical power theory and generation, reactor principles and technology, and thermodynamics. Ranked 15th in her class, LTJG Assenmacher will advance to a 6-month hands-on training program in New York before proceeding to an assignment on an aircraft carrier, supervising a division of dozens of sailors in the Reactor Department and standing watch in the engineering plant to provide power and propulsion to the ship. Way to go, LTJG Assenmacher, and thank you for your service!
