Seniors Amanda Assenmacher and Nathaniel Schwed Earn National Merit Recognition for Achievement

Principal Jeff Smith, Superintendent, Dr. Janet Samuels and the Board of School Directors honored 2 Norristown Area High School seniors, Amanda Assenmacher and Nathaniel Schwed, during the April 23 School Board meeting for outstanding achievement on the National Merit Qualifying Exam. The students' parents were in attendance and were also applauded for their role in helping Amanda and Nathaniel achieve at such high levels.

Over 1.5 million students participate annually in this national competition, and Amanda and Nathaniel’s scores were among the highest in the nation!  Scores on this exam are used to designate groups of students to be honored in National Merit competitions. The exam accesses aptitude in critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills.

Amanda’s scores placed her among the top 1% of all students. She was notified in February that she met the academic and other requirements to attain Finalist standing. Fewer than 15,000 students across the nation earn this distinction. Amanda received a Certificate of Merit during the School Board meeting from Dr. Samuels.

Nathaniel ranked among the top 2.3% of all students. He was notified that he had achieved Commended status. Dr. Samuels presented Nathaniel with a Letter of Commendation. President Mrs. Denise Ashe and Vice President Mrs. Pearl Smith helped honor the students, too.

Amanda will attend the US Naval Academy in the fall.  She will major in Political Science and ultimately pursue International Politics and Law. Amanda applied to and was accepted at the US Naval Academy, Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany, Harvard University, Virginia Tech, University of Rochester, University of Pittsburgh, University of New Haven, Roanoke College and American University.

 Student Acceptance

Nathaniel will attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall and major in Biomedical Engineering. Nathaniel applied to one other university, Case Western Reserve University, and was accepted here, as well.

The faculty and staff of Norristown Area School District wish Amanda and Nathaniel the very best as they pursue their college and career dreams.
