Overview

Davenport Elementary School (formerly Gotwals) is located in the Municipality of Norristown with student population of approximately 400 students in grades 1-4. The school was renamed in 2023 in honor of Alice Davenport (1919-2023).

Ms. Davenport was the first Black teacher in Norristown. She was a teacher, guidance counselor, tutor, volunteer, and mentor. Over her extraordinary career, she focused on students in kindergarten through third grade and often shared her own experiences as examples of life outside the classroom.

Monthly grade level Open Communication Meetings are held for parents to discuss curriculum, assessments, instructional strategies, KidWriting, CompassLearning and guided reading. This is in addition to regularly scheduled Parent-Faculty Club meetings.

One-on-one tutoring is provided for students from Citizen Bank volunteers, Eastern College students, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Delta Sigma Sorority, and Foster Grandparents. Summer and Saturday academic classes are held to strengthen skills through differentiated standards-based instruction in reading and math.
