Students in Ms. Hohenstein's class completed projects on famous figures in Black History.

In library class, our kindergarten students read Freight Train by Donald Crews, a Caldecott Honor Book known for its bold, colorful illustrations and simple text. As we followed the train on its journey through the countryside, we identified the brightly colored cars — like the orange tank car, green cattle car, and red caboose — and learned their names.
To extend our learning, we built our own train track and became engineers! Using coding skills, we programmed our “Steam Engine” to stop and go at different points along the track. Students practiced sequencing, problem-solving, and teamwork as they tested and adjusted their code.
This activity helped us connect literacy, colors, transportation, and early coding concepts in a creative and engaging way!

Mrs. McCormick’s class is celebrating Black History Month by learning about influential Black leaders who changed the world.
Here are some of their most recent work! Students completed a “Guess Who?” project by reading different passages and then used visuals and sentence frames to identify key facts about historical figures. Students also read Mae Among the Stars and learned about Dr. Mae Jemison. Students dreamed of careers they hope to pursue, just as Dr. Jemison followed her own dreams.
All activities are thoughtfully adapted to meet students individual needs so everyone can meaningfully access and engage in learning about Black history.
