Students in second grade library class read Balloons Over Broadway, which tells the story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer who invented the giant balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. After reading, they worked in small groups to create their own balloons and paraded them down the library.

In 3rd Grade, we read Our Table by Peter H. Reynolds. The book is a fable about the importance of human connection, family traditions, and the impact of technology. After reading, students worked together to build a table for their feast. Through perseverance and collaboration, they came to understand how important it is to communicate with one another.

Students learned about the life and legacy of Frida Kahlo as a part of celebrating Hispanic heritage month. We learned about her life challenges, explored her art work, and analyzed figurative language in her famous quote:

“FEET, WHAT DO I NEED YOU FOR

WHEN I HAVE WINGS TO FLY”

Today students from Miss McCormick’s room enjoyed adapted literacy activities using the book There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey, written by Lucille Colandro and illustrated by Jared Lee.

They then joined a live reading of the story with the author, along with classrooms from across the country. Students even had the chance to ask questions and interact with the author as a whole group. This was a perfect way to end American Education Week with inclusive literacy practices that bring every learner into the story!

We also enjoyed our special guests from NAHS, Unidad (Latino Leadership Club) and Sabor Latino Dance Crew.

A message from the NASD Dental Hygienist about the importance of taking care of children's baby teeth.

As I conduct dental screenings as part of NASD’s Dental Hygiene Services Program, I would like to focus on the importance of maintaining healthy baby teeth. Children develop their first set of teeth, most commonly called “Baby Teeth”, between the ages of 6 months and 3 years. These teeth are also referred to as primary, deciduous, or milk teeth. Between the ages of 5-7 years and again around 10-12 years old, children will lose their “baby teeth'', to allow for the growth of permanent or “adult teeth”.
It is a common myth that baby teeth are not important since they will eventually fall out. Children need these teeth to last for a total of six to ten years. Maintaining good oral health is extremely important, whether it be through the prevention of cavities, or when necessary treating any cavities to return to health.
The function of baby teeth is to allow children to chew their food and maintain proper nutrition for optimal health and growth. Teeth are necessary for speech and language development, and also contribute to aesthetics and give shape to our face.
Tooth decay is the number one reason for student absences and frequent visits to the school nurse. Students with dental pain are four times more likely to earn lower grades than healthier students since the pain and discomfort interferes with their ability to concentrate and learn. Untreated cavities not only can cause discomfort and pain, but can lead to infection that can spread throughout the body. When children are pain free & feel good about their smile, they are happy and confident!!

We had our 2nd Mystery Motivator of the year with 30 students. Students who were on our 200 board and all 10 spaces in their row were covered with pictures, got to play with playdough in the cafeteria. All of the students enjoyed themselves and played nicely together. Click the link below for photos.
