Students in Ms. Hohenstein's class completed projects on famous figures in Black History.

In library class, our kindergarten students read Freight Train by Donald Crews, a Caldecott Honor Book known for its bold, colorful illustrations and simple text. As we followed the train on its journey through the countryside, we identified the brightly colored cars — like the orange tank car, green cattle car, and red caboose — and learned their names.
To extend our learning, we built our own train track and became engineers! Using coding skills, we programmed our “Steam Engine” to stop and go at different points along the track. Students practiced sequencing, problem-solving, and teamwork as they tested and adjusted their code.
This activity helped us connect literacy, colors, transportation, and early coding concepts in a creative and engaging way!

Mrs. McCormick’s class is celebrating Black History Month by learning about influential Black leaders who changed the world.
Here are some of their most recent work! Students completed a “Guess Who?” project by reading different passages and then used visuals and sentence frames to identify key facts about historical figures. Students also read Mae Among the Stars and learned about Dr. Mae Jemison. Students dreamed of careers they hope to pursue, just as Dr. Jemison followed her own dreams.
All activities are thoughtfully adapted to meet students individual needs so everyone can meaningfully access and engage in learning about Black history.

Good Afternoon Whitehall Families,

Each week Golden PAWS are awarded to a student in each grade for going above and beyond and that exemplifies the quality of the month. In February we are focusing on Gratitude. The students were rewarded with a medal, a prize, and due to a partnership with the Elmwood Park Zoo two free admission tickets to the zoo. Congratulations to our winners and a special thank you to the Elmwood Park Zoo.

Ms.Hohenstein and Ms. McCormick hosted the 2026 Winter Olympics! ❄️🏅
Our athletes showed up ready to compete and have fun. From proudly carrying the Olympic torches and earning medals to hands on events like Bee-Bot Curling, crafts, and interactive differentiated academic skill challenges, every student had a chance to shine.
We saw problem solving, teamwork, and so much joy as students practiced skills, cheered for friends and celebrated their hard work. A perfect reminder that everyone is an athlete with hard work and determination.

Over the last few weeks, all Whitehall students received internet safety lessons. The lessons included information on cyberbullying, digital footprints, and being a good digital citizen. The students in 4th Grade created a comic strip of cyberbullying and how to be an upstander. This student did a fabulous job conveying how to be an upstander to cyberbullying.

All NASD buildings are closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January, 27, 2026 due to ongoing weather-related cleanup.
Learning will continue through a Flexible Instructional Day (FID). Live synchronous instruction in the morning will take place with independent asynchronous student assignments in the afternoon.
Please check email for full details.
