Kindergarten read Pig the Monster by Aaron Blabey. We learned that it's good to share and that dogs should definitely NOT eat chocolate! We ended our lesson by coding Pig to get to the Skittles. We did a great job giving a set of directions and Pig shared his Skittles with us.

Kindergarten students absolutely loved seeing if pumpkins sink or float? Ask them what they learned, we were surprised! We also learned the life cycle of a pumpkin, it takes about 4 months for a pumpkin to grow!

Fourth grade students read a biography book on Frida Kahlo in library class. We learned that she painted many self portraits and often included her pet animals. Students designed and built their own paintbrush. They tested out their design by painting a portrait of Frida.

On October 3, Whitehall students and staff attended an assembly to kick off our school-wide positive behavior plan called PAWS. PAWS is an acronym that stands for Practice Respect, Act Responsibly, Work Hard, and Safety First. These are the 4 behavioral expectations that we hold for everyone in our building.
Students were taught the expectations throughout the month of September and starting in October they were able to earn a PAWS ticket for following our behavior expectations. Once they accumulate a multiple of 5, students get rewarded and their picture gets put on our 200 board located in the main lobby.
The following students earned 5 PAWS and were rewarded last week. Keep up the PAWTASTIC work.

Kindergarten students had a great time learning about fire 🔥 safety and seeing the big, red fire truck 🚒 come to school last week! We also enjoyed meeting our third grade buddies and doing activities together. Keep up the great work, Kindergarten!
For Fire Prevention Week the Jefferson Fire Company visited Whitehall to show off their trucks and equipment.

Each week a Golden Paw is awarded to a student in each grade for going above and beyond and that exemplifies the quality of the month. This month we focused on Positivity. The students were rewarded with a medal, a prize, and due to a partnership with the Elmwood Park Zoo two free admission tickets to the zoo. Congratulations to our winners and a special thank you to the Elmwood Park Zoo.

The Parent Faculty Club would like to invite you to our meeting this Wednesday, October 8th at 5:30 PM in the School Library. A teacher representative from the 3rd grade teaching team will be in attendance along with our principal, Dr.Kirksey. A translator will be provided for our Spanish-speaking families. We look forward to seeing you there!

Today, we held our PAWS Kickoff Assembly. At the assembly, student and staff participants played a game of Jeopardy with questions about our PAWS behavior expectations. Everyone worked hard and had fun.

In October we celebrate AAC Awareness Month. AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and it includes a wide range of tools that help people communicate. This can look like picture symbols, communication boards, talking devices, or even gestures and sign language. AAC isn’t only for people who are nonverbal, it can also support those who are vocal by giving them multiple ways to express themselves and strengthen their language skills.
This week, Luis made history at our school by being the very first student to use AAC to deliver the morning announcements! His hard work and determination showed the entire school community that every voice matters and that AAC empowers individuals to share something amazing. We are so proud of Luis and celebrate the progress of all our students who work every day to grow their communication skills.
